HUT OR SHED HUT OR SHED is a small off-grid structure located in the backyard of a residence outside of Boston. Measuring just 8 feet wide by 12.5 feet deep and 11 feet high, the structure was conceived as an outdoor sleeping retreat — a quiet space for rest and seasonal living.

Minimal and intentionally ambiguous in form, the project explores the relationship between material expression and typological identity, raising the question: is it a hut or a shed? To support this dual reading, two exterior finish strategies were developed. One references the utilitarian language of rural storage structures through metal cladding, while the other draws from vernacular cabins in colder climates through the use of vertical wood slats.

We proposed Kebony wood for its muted rustic character and the soft gray patina it develops over time, allowing the structure to quietly recede into the surrounding landscape and hardscape.

This project was completed in collaboration with Sven Schroeter.
